Barcelona has officially completed the blockbuster signing of Rodri. The Spanish midfielder leaves Manchester City to sign a contract with the Camp Nou side until June 30, 2030, after turning down an offer from Real Madrid.

Barcelona and Manchester City have reached an agreement for the transfer of Rodrigo Hernandez Cascante, commonly known as Rodri. The 30-year-old midfielder has put pen to paper on a contract with the Catalan club until June 30, 2030.

According to released information, Barcelona will pay a transfer fee of €60 million, plus €15 million in add-ons. Of these bonuses, around €11 million are considered almost certain to be triggered. The total value of the deal could reach €75 million. Rodri is also reportedly set to earn a salary of around €15 million per year, higher than what he received at Manchester City.

This is regarded as one of the most notable transfers of the summer of 2026, as Barcelona not only signed a world-class midfielder but also secured the signature of the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner and the best player of the 2026 World Cup.

On August 18 (local time), Rodri made his debut with his new club. After completing his medical, Rodri did not hide his joy at officially becoming a Barcelona player.

"I am very happy to be here. This is a special day, opening an important chapter in my career," Rodri shared.

The Spanish midfielder also admitted that the decision to leave Manchester City was not easy. "First of all, because I had to leave City. They gave me everything. I was very happy there and will always be grateful to the club. I thank them for making it possible for me to leave."

But when asked about the reason for choosing Barcelona, Rodri affirmed that the Catalan club was always his top priority. "Barcelona has always been a global benchmark for me, because of the way they understand football and the club's values. It's true I had another offer, but Barca was the first choice and I told the management that."

Rodri was born on June 22, 1996, in Madrid. He came through the youth system of Atletico Madrid but completed his final development at Villarreal. It was at Villarreal that Rodri got his debut in La Liga and quickly made an impression.

Outstanding performances helped Atletico Madrid bring him back in 2018. Just one season later, Manchester City signed Rodri. Seven years at the Etihad turned the Spanish midfielder into one of the most important players of the Pep Guardiola era. Rodri won numerous titles with Man City, including multiple Premier League championships, FA Cups, and the 2023 Champions League. Notably, Rodri himself scored the decisive goal that helped Man City beat Inter Milan in the 2023 Champions League final, securing the club's first European trophy in history. In total, Rodri won 13 trophies during his time at Man City.

If success at club level helped Rodri establish his class, the Spanish national team took him to another level. Rodri played a key role in Spain's victorious run at EURO 2024. That achievement contributed to his winning the 2024 Ballon d'Or, making him one of the rare defensive midfielders honored with the most prestigious individual award in world football. Later, Rodri continued to lead Spain at the 2026 World Cup. Spain became world champions, while Rodri was awarded the World Cup Golden Ball, the prize for the tournament's best player.

What is noteworthy is that Rodri does not only play as a traditional defensive midfielder. His ability to read the game, control the ball, recover possession, and join attacks makes him one of the most complete midfielders in the world.

Rodri joins Barcelona at the age of 30, but this transfer is still considered particularly significant.

Three years after Sergio Busquets left the club, Barcelona has finally found a player with the right qualities to fill the enormous void left by the Spanish legend.

Rodri not only possesses the skill but also has the experience, leadership, and maturity needed to guide a young generation. Notably, he has already played alongside many Barcelona players in the Spanish national team. After the World Cup victory, Rodri understands even better the quality of the young teammates he will join at Camp Nou.

For Barcelona, this is not simply about bringing in a world-class midfielder. It is also a strategic move: signing a player who can become the midfield leader, while also preventing Real Madrid from acquiring the very type of midfielder that their rivals need most.
