AC Milan has another "blockbuster": When San Siro speaks Portuguese

On the late afternoon of August 17, Milan unexpectedly closed the transfer of left winger Diego Moreira from Strasbourg for 50 million euros without additional fees, a very strong investment decision.

After the news was confirmed by expert Fabrizio Romano with his familiar "Here we go" slogan, even Milan fans were taken aback. Who is Moreira and why is he valued so highly? The media was completely caught off guard, as there was no prior indication that Milan was pursuing the player who just turned 22 on August 6.

Moreira is a Belgian player, born in Belgium but with a distinctly Portuguese name. He is the son of a former player from Guinea-Bissau (a Portuguese colony for over 500 years), who once played for Belgian club Standard Liège. He speaks Portuguese, spent several years in Portugal's youth teams, and officially chose to represent the Belgian national team from late 2025, earning a spot in Belgium's squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Moreira is a versatile player capable of playing every position from left-back to left winger, right winger, or as a number 10 playmaker. With a strong and skillful left foot, he can cross, break through from the left flank, or cut inside from the right to finish with his left foot in the style of Lamine Yamal. His exceptional dribbling can create huge breakthroughs, while his direct attacking effectiveness is also backed by statistics. In the last two Ligue 1 seasons, only Desire Doue (23) has contributed to more goals than Moreira (19, consisting of 6 goals and 13 assists) among U21 players.

After Goncalo Ramos pleased the fans with a brilliant performance in the friendly win over Manchester United 4-2, Moreira's arrival further boosts optimism about Milan's progress this season. Another "blockbuster" requested by new coach Ruben Amorim further affirms the Milan board's confidence in the Portuguese manager's project. Although Rafael Leao is considered no longer a fit and could leave in the coming days, a Portuguese-flavored Milan continues to be built. After securing Moreira, the perfect addition to the left-wing role in Amorim's 3-4-2-1 formation, Milan will focus on signing another center-back, with top targets Goncalo Inacio (Sporting) and Gabriel Tiago (Lecce) also being Portuguese.

Milan previously failed with two Portuguese coaches, Paulo Fonseca and Sergio Conceicao, in the 2024-25 season, but this Portuguese-ization campaign, with Amorim and the heavy investment from the American owners, appears very promising.
